This Little Light [Project] of Mine

What do you do when you’re drooling over Ballard Designs and Restoration Hardware’s light fixtures but can't dream of spending hundreds of dollars on a single light?...make a knock off!

Here was my kitchen lighting inspiration...ahhh, so pretty, and soooo not affordable!

So, I found two dated, brass light fixtures at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and picked them up for $24. Neither of the metals matched each other...I think they were from two different decades. But, they were the perfect size and shape for what I was looking for. Coordinating, but not matchy-matchy.

I picked up some Valspar flat black spray paint from Lowes and went to work. We cleaned the glass and brass well and completely took them apart. Then we just laid the painter’s tape down over the glass and used a razor blade to cut off the excess. We didn't tape off the inside, so it is still brass, but you can't even tell! After this, I rubbed down both light fixtures with a liquid deglazer to rough up the surface. Then they went out to the garage for a couple of coats of black paint.

As soon as the parts were dry to the touch, they were reassembled and hung in our kitchen. So there you go – a $10 light, a can of spray paint and wallah, an affordable lantern light fixture!

Oh, and here is a little tidbit from our kitchen update...isn't it beautful?
